From 22/5/08 to 21/10/08 the “Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe” presented a large exhibition called
“Vertrautes Terrain – Contemporary Art in/ about Germany”.

For one month (22/5 – 22/6) “Graffiti for God” was present with four light boxes, in the exhibition’s “Resonanzraum”, which served as the communicative centre of the exhibition, presenting artists and projects from different cultural realms such as architecture, design, documentary, film, graphic arts, street art, fashion, music, and editorial art in four monthly sets.

Speech Bubble is a parasite that sucks radiation from its host, the mobile phone, especially made for for young urban professionals with a lack of intimacy. It is part of my bachelor thesis project “Awareness tools for everyday, invisible radiation fields”. ⟩ detailed description of the bachelor thesis

Like a parasite, Speech Bubble absorbs the electromagnetic radiation from a mobile phone. The longer it is exposed to radiation, the more it grows, thus changing its shape. When someone talks on the phone for too long, the bubble will get bigger and bigger, moving away from their head, protecting them from “boiling brain cells”.

Video Prototype:

The short video above shows a possible utilisation scenario. We see a young man who is out on business a lot and has to use his phone permanently. Therefore he wants to protect himself from electromagnetic radiation. However, he uses the Speech Bubble not only as a protection against the radiation but “misuses” it, stroking it while talking to his partner whom he sees rarely.

Simplified Illustration & Technical Prototype:

The simplified illustration demonstrates how the phone shell is inflating with continuous radiation. The video shows a simple, reasonably working prototype. An electro-smog sensor reacts to the increasing radiation of the mobile phone during an incoming call, transmitting this signal to a small pump, which is inflating a balloon as long as the phone is active. Some components of the object have been taken from other technical devices. Pump and valve, for example, were taken from a commercial automatic blood pressure meter and would be very hard to find and/or very expansive individually.

The following components were used:

- a mini pump, type KPM14A (DC 3V)

- a valve, type KSV05A-3A1 (DC 3V)

- a battery pack, type Accumulator NiMH (6xAAA 7,2V/650mAh 2pol. BEC)

- a WLAN-sensor

- an electro-smog-sensor

- a circuit board (incl. Standalone Arduino)

Kinderguard is a cuddly toy that sucks electromagnetic radiation from its surroundings, especially made for kids and their parents. It is part of my bachelor thesis project “Awareness tools for everyday, invisible radiation fields”. ⟩ detailed description of the bachelor thesis

The object absorbs electromagnetic radiation from its surroundings. The longer it is exposed to electro-smog, the more it inflates, thus changing its shape. Absorbing the electro-smog-radiation, the “Kinderguard” provides protection from its negative effects. The object’s outer shell is formed like a cuddly toy and it contains a collection bag similar to a garbage- or vacuum cleaner bag, which has to be changed when full.

Video Prototype:

The short video above shows a possible utilisation scenario. We see a young boy who loves watching television. The “Kinderguard” not only helps his parents to protect him from electro-smog-radiation, it also raises the awareness of the young boy himself, as he can see that the “Kinderguard” inflates whenever it’s exposed to electro-smog-radiation. But while his parents use the “Kinderguard” as a protection from radiation, the boy “misuses” the object as a cuddly toy which he can play with while watching television.

The Carma Cube absorbs electromagnetic radiation from its surroundings. The longer it is exposed to electro-smog, the more it inflates, thus changing its shape. It consists of a square-cut outer body and an inflatable device on the inside. The longer the object is exposed to electro-smog-radiation, the more the inside inflates, finally emerging through the holes of the outer body. The object changes its shape, finally becoming round and soft.

Video Prototype:

The short video above shows a possible utilisation scenario. We see an elderly woman in her home, surrounded by invisible everyday radiation. After some stitching and baking she sits down in front of the TV to get some rest. She uses the Carma Cube for protection from electro-smog-radiation but at the same time she “misuses” the object as some kind of pet, holding it on her lap and stroking it like a cat.

The aim of my bachelor thesis “Awareness Tools for everyday, invisible radiation fields” was to provide alternatives in designing electronic objects based on the whole spectrum of people’s attitudes towards electro-smog. The objects are supposed to make invisible everyday radiation fields perceptible without becoming radiation guns themselves. They are supposed to be not only aesthetically but also emotionally appealing. Form, function and performance all play with the users’ expectation and aim at changing their perception and utilisation of technical devices. The added value of the objects exceeds pure functionality. Ultimately, an emotional bond between the object and the user is established, leading the user to a reflection about his or her own notions of electro-smog.

An online version of “Graffiti for God” is now also available at www.graffitiforgod.org.
It invites everyone to work collaboratively on “Graffiti for Gods”.

Graffiti for God is a city map mashup of Graffiti, Goggle and God, based on Google Maps.

It mainly locates flat roofs in the centre of East Berlin and reinterprets them as skyward canvases for graffiti “authors”. In addition, several other location categories are depicted and correlated: police stations, hospitals or monitored areas (via CCTV, vigilante groups etc.), as well as religious institutions such as churches or graveyards.

The idea of mapping rooftop graffiti was inspired by “Waxt” and “Nemo”, whose piece in the centre of Berlin is already visible on Google Maps. In the style of medieval maps, where Jerusalem was often represented at the centre of the geographical drawings, with God as the heavenly observer from above, this piece marks the centre of “Graffiti for God”.

Put in a light box of about 1 x 2 m in size, the map was part of the international street art exhibition „Planet Prozess“ in Berlin in summer 2007, as well as the exhibition “Vertrautes Terrain – Contemporary Art in/ about Germany” at Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe.

R.eddy Teddy is the prototype for the Awarenesstools series.

This teddy bear is nourished by WIFI-, mobile phone- and Bluetooth-radiation. His coming alive depends on the radiation strength and amplitude. The more radiation he’s exposed to, the faster his heart beats. Finally his eyes will start to blink and his head will turn. The R.eddy Teddy provides the user with a radiation analyser while fortifying a “design noir” approach. However, the surrounding radiation also forms the teddy bear’s very ecological niche. He feeds on radiation and becomes alive when there is enough food. The skin of the R.eddy Teddy is hand-made, his inner life consists of an arduino-board, a modified WIFI-Bluetooth-search device, LEDs, a servomotor and a piezo speaker. To test the whole concept and the bear itself, three different prototypes were made and tested with various children and their parents.
